An update on car parking at the John Radcliffe Hospital

09/01/2024

From Monday 15 January 2024 at 8.00am, Car Park 1 at the John Radcliffe Hospital (near the Trauma Building and Oxford Critical Care) will change to a staff car park.

What is happening

  • Car Park 1 is currently made up of patient and visitor parking
  • From Monday 15 January, the patient and visitor spaces will move from Car Park 1 to Car Park A3 (Camel's Head, next to the helipad)
  • Car Park 1 will then be a staff car park until work starts on the new theatres building, when it will then close
  • The current late shift car park (between the Trauma building and the Blood Donor Centre) will convert to visitor parking and Blue Badge spaces
  • The new late shift parking will be in Car Park B2 behind the Wolfson Building
  • The website map has been updated to show these changes: John Radcliffe Hospital site map (pdf)
  • There will be no change to the number of patient and visitor spaces.

These changes are being made as part of a range of infrastructure enabling and maintenance works to the area, and in advance of our proposal to consider a new Theatres Building on the John Radcliffe Hospital site. The plan is ultimately for 14 additional operating theatres to address current waiting lists for elective (routine) procedures and to meet growing demand for our services.

The Trust's Travel and Transport team will prepare wayfinding signs, update the relevant patient documents, and update the OUH website and maps to reflect these changes. The project team is working to update the necessary signs and maps, as well as working with Estates colleagues to help patients who may need assistance with access.

Mark Holloway, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at OUH, said: "This relocation is an important part of our proposed plan for a new theatres building, as well as supporting essential infrastructure work.

"We are working closely with our project team to minimise any impact to our patients and visitors, and thank people in advance for their patience and understanding.

"We will also work with our staff in the creation of an overarching Framework Transport Strategy for the management of staff parking at OUH more broadly, including exploring wider transport options."
