Oxford Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre: Annual Review

Your annual review is a chance for you to reflect together with the multidisciplinary team, how your health has been over the previous year, and whether we need to make any changes to prevent or limit symptoms and complications of your Cystic Fibrosis.

Annual review provides an opportunity for a more detailed assessment of your current health and treatments than is possible during a routine clinic visit, and allows us to screen for potential new complications.

This helps us to provide you with the best possible treatment advice and support to keep you well, aiming to minimise the impact of your disease on your life now and in the future. It is important you attend for annual review so the team have as much information as possible when making recommendations about your care.

Information we collect at this assessment is entered into the national CF registry with your consent. Providing this information is linked to how your care is funded and provides an invaluable resource for Cystic Fibrosis research.

How the annual review is offered

We will invite you to your annual review in two parts. The first part is a full morning of in-person reviews with each member of the multidisciplinary team.

We will then invite you to a second part where you will see a doctor, who will have all the reports and tests completed at the first part available to discuss with you.

Because we care for many patients, we have limited flexibility around particularly first part reviews. It is important that you do attend your appointment, or give us plenty of notice if you are unable to make a date when offered to you.

If you do not attend these appointments without giving us enough notice it is likely we may not be able to offer an alternative appointment until the following year.

Annual Review Part 1

First part annual reviews take place face-to-face in the Outpatients Blue Area at the John Radcliffe Hospital on a Wednesday morning.

Please arrive promptly at 9.00am: we expect the appointment to finish at 12.45pm.

Please bring flat shoes / appropriate clothing with you for your exercise test.

The first part of the morning will involve the following.

  • Blood tests
  • CF-Related Diabetes Screening (Freestyle Libre sensor will be provided at appointment)
  • Spirometry
  • CF Specialist Nurse review
  • Physiotherapy review
  • Ineb download (please bring your Ineb nebuliser with you if you use this device)
  • Exercise test (static bike test)
  • Dietitian review
  • Psychology review - please fill in the questionnaires provided and give them to the Psychologist
  • Chest X-ray

We may offer you Dexa scanning or an abdominal ultrasound depending on your individual needs. These appointments will be booked at another time via the appropriate department.

Annual Review Part 2

The second part of your annual review will take place in a clinic a few weeks after the first part. This may be offered as a virtual (video) appointment.

At this appointment, a doctor will discuss the results of your Annual Review Part 1 with you, and help you plan for the year ahead.

Other members of the multidisciplinary team may offer you follow-up care as necessary.
