DAISY awards

DAISY Awards scheme for exceptional nurses and midwives.

In 2018 we launched the DAISY Foundation® Awards - a scheme for registered nurses and midwives.  DAISY awards allow patients, their families as well as colleagues to nominate a nurse or midwife who has made a real difference through outstanding clinical care.

Chief Nurse, Sam Foster said, "We're proud to be among the thousands of renowned hospitals worldwide who participate in the DAISY programme who also celebrate the skillful and compassionate care provided by individual nurses and midwives. Importantly,  these awards fit well with our existing OUH Staff Achievement Awards."

The DAISY Award is an opportunity to say 'thank you' to a nurse or midwife whose outstanding clinical care you will never forget.

What is the DAISY Award?

The award scheme was created in the USA in 1999 by the family of J Patrick Barnes following his death from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP. The DAISY Foundation commemorates the appreciation Patrick's family had for the nursing care and compassion shown to him and his family. Following Patrick's death, they felt compelled to thank the nurses in a very public way by establishing the Foundation.

More information about DAISY from the late J Patrick Barnes' family can be found in this YouTube video.

How does it work?

Each DAISY award recipient will be recognized at a surprise ceremony, typically in her or his ward or department. They'll receive a DAISY award pin, certificate, a hand-carved sculpture A Healer's Touch and an invitation to the OUH Staff Achievement Awards Ceremony.

Sometimes, the person who nominated the individual attends to read the nomination which often is a really moving and heartfelt moment for all staff allowing them stop and reflect in an otherwise busy professional life.

Making a nomination

Complete and return by email to or post (address on form).

Please don't forget to complete the data consent boxes on the form.

Nominations are evaluated by our volunteers in the Magnet Program Team to ensure that the individuals meet the DAISYcriteria (i.e. the person nominated is a registered nurse or midwife employed by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).

Your nomination will then be anonymised and considered by an expert panel. Each nomination is considered against a scoring criteria. There are twenty-four awards a year. (Three are for midwives and twenty-one for nurses.)

Due to the volume of nominations we are unable to contact each nominator but if your nominee is successful we will be be in touch. However, each nominee receives a congratulatory letter and a badge, whether or not they are selected.

We thank for you for considering nominating one of our amazing nurses or midwives.
