Centres and units on the hospital site

The John Radcliffe site contains a number of buildings. The main ones are listed below. Please check carefully where you need to go so that you can choose the closest car park or bus stop.

Children's Hospital

The Children's Hospital, which opened in 2007, is located at the foot of the hill, by the main site entrance from Headley Way.

Children's Services

West Wing (including the Oxford Eye Hospital)

The West Wing shares an atrium with the Children's Hospital but has its own lifts near the reception desk.

It provides purpose-built accommodation for adult services, including neurosciences, Oxford Eye Hospital and University of Oxford facilities.

Oxford Heart Centre

The Oxford Heart Centre is located half way up the hill next to the Emergency Department (A&E).

The main hospital on the John Radcliffe site is linked to the Children's Hospital and the Oxford Heart Centre on Level 2 and includes the Emergency Department (A&E) and most adult services.

Departments and services

John Radcliffe Hospital Main Theatres is a regional centre for the provision of trauma, vascular and spinal surgery for adults and children,and provides expertise in emergency surgery including:

  • upper and lower GI
  • gynaecology
  • urology
  • spinal
  • trauma
  • cardiothoracic
  • vascular.

We also provide a respiratory interventional service.

A Theatre Direct Admissions unit is used extensively for the direct admission of patients for surgery in various specialties.

This is a separate building for maternity, gynaecology and neonatal services located at the top of the hill.

Oxford Critical Care Centre

The Critical Care Centre, opened in April 2022, provides a modern bespoke critical care unit on the John Radcliffe Hospital site.

It features 48 beds across three floors, and the Oxford Hospitals Education Centre (OxHEC) on Level 5.

Directions to Oxford Hospitals Education Centre (OxHEC)

Enter the main JR Hospital via the Level 2 main entrance and continue up the main corridor until you reach the League of Friends Café. From there take the stairs down to Level 1. Follow signs to Oxford Critical Care.

Entry is via the Level 1 ICU corridor or Trauma Outpatients corridor at the JR. Please press the button marked OxHEC for access to Level 5.
