Outpatient appointments

It is natural to be apprehensive about seeing a doctor in the hospital.

Our patients often have problems they feel embarrassed about - but this is the nature of our work, and we treat all our patients with care and sensitivity.

No particular preparation is required for your clinic appointment. We will explain everything to you. The appointment may involve an examination of your tummy and bottom. This examination is normally brief, should not be painful and you will have a nurse to support you throughout.

You are welcome to bring a relative or friend to the clinic for your appointment. This is a good idea if another specialist has referred you, and we expect to discuss surgery.

It is often a good idea to write down your questions before your appointment, and you are welcome to take notes during the consultation.

Tests / investigations

Tests and investigations may be carried out at a separate appointment either before or after a consultation with a colorectal surgeon.

  • Endoscopy
  • X-rays (including CT scans and MRI)
  • Anorectal physiology and ultrasound
The term 'anorectal' refers to the anal canal and rectum: physiology tests assess the strength of your pelvic muscles, sphincter and nerves whilst the ultrasound examines the structure of the pelvic floor muscles and any damage that has occurred to them.
  • Proctogram
This is a specialised X-ray of the rectum (back passage) which examines how the rectum empties.
