The hospital is within 10 minutes walk of Headington Centre. It has an entrance on Osler Road, Sandfield Road and Saxon Way as well as Headley Way. This makes access easy from all directions.

Rotating (tactile) cones at traffic light controlled crossings in Oxfordshire

Where two or more controlled pedestrian crossings are close to each other, we are unable to use audible bleepers in support of the 'green man' to indicate when it is safe to cross the road.

Almost all traffic signal controlled crossings in Oxfordshire where a bleeper cannot be used have a tactile cone fitted. These are about the size and shape of a thimble, and located on the underside of push button boxes.

Once you have pressed the button to call the pedestrian phase, just slide your hand across the underneath of the push button box where you will find the cone. Hold it lightly. When the traffic has been shown a red light, and the steady green man is showing, the cone will rotate gently for the same period that a bleeper would have operated. It is, of course, important to remember that cars may still be on the crossing if there are queues. You should use whatever means you have available to try and check that vehicles have stopped and your way is clear.

Cycling

A map of Oxford's cycle network is available from Oxfordshire County Council.

There is cycle parking throughout the site and covered cycle parking outside the Heart Centre and West Wing entrance, in Car Park 3, and under the West Wing.

Important - e-scooters

Voi e-scooters are available within Oxford via the Voi app on the Apple App Store for iPhone.

These e-scooters are not allowed on our hospital sites - they will cut out near the entrances to our hospital sites and will not work on site.

Motorcycles

There is free motorcycle parking under the West Wing in Car Park 3 and on the ground floor of staff Car Park D.

If your motorcycle is too wide to go around the car park barriers, please press the intercom button for assistance.

Footpaths to the site, and cycle/motorcycle parking areas, are shown on the John Radcliffe hospital site map.

Coach

Oxford Tube coaches operate frequently 24 hours a day to and from central London.

They stop in Headington Centre and at Gipsy Lane.

Coming from London, get off in London Road at the stop announced 'Headington shops': cross London Road and walk down the nearby Osler Road (the turning before the Shell petrol station). This will take you to the top of the John Radcliffe site, to the Women's Centre. You can walk past the Women's Centre to the main hospital and access the West Wing and Children's Hospital through a link corridor from there.

Rail

We are three miles from Oxford railway station, with its frequent trains from London (Paddington) and many other parts of the UK.

Please allow at least 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from the station forecourt and 30 minutes by buses 13 or 14.

See National Rail Enquiries for the latest train times and service updates.

Oxford City Council provides a list of telephone numbers for taxi companies on their website.

Air

Oxford is well placed for airports in London and Birmingham. London Heathrow is about 70 minutes by coach. Coach services to both Heathrow and Gatwick stop in Headington Centre and Gipsy Lane.
