Development of the Oxford professional practice model

In early 2015 a series of focus groups were held with the aim of defining the way forward for the professions of nursing and midwifery at Oxford University Hospitals.

About 350 nurses and midwives participated from all specialties, sites and grades and with lengths of service ranging from five months to 34 years.

Nurse and midwife leaders, members of the interdisciplinary team and academic colleagues from Oxford Brookes University andOxford Institute of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Research (OxINMAHR) were also consulted.

In order to build upon the rich history of nursing excellence at Oxford over many years’ members of the Radcliffe Infirmary Guild of Nurses were also involved in reviewing the work.

It is important to recognise that this work heralds a fresh chapter in nursing and midwifery at Oxford and aims to provide clarity but it is built on the firm foundations created by countless individuals over 125 years of professional nursing at Oxford.
