Horton General Hospital and Brackley Medical Centre Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy Outpatient Department at the Horton General Hospital offers outpatient physiotherapy to patients referred by Trauma Services.

Brackley Medical Centre offers outpatient physiotherapy to patients over the age of 16 from areas outside Oxfordshire. You need a referral from your GP.

This service is delivered by physiotherapists working for Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) who are members of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Conditions that we commonly treat include:

  • neck pain and headaches
  • shoulder/arm pain
  • low back pain
  • nerve pain
  • knee/leg pain
  • repetitive strain injuries
  • arthritis
  • sports-related injuries
  • most joint and muscle pain.

On attending the department

  • Your first appointment may last 45-60 minutes. Your review appointment may last up to 30 minutes.
  • If you do not speak English, the therapist will use an interpreter, via telephone.
  • We will ask you to complete questionnaires about your condition, for the physiotherapist treating you and for the person who referred you. These will take about 10 minutes to complete.
  • We will discuss your problem / why you have been referred for physiotherapy, and your general health and wellbeing, with you.
  • We will give you a detailed examination, involving you having to move in different directions.
  • We may ask you to undress, so please wear appropriate underwear. If you have a back or leg problem, please bring shorts: if you have a shoulder problem, please bring a vest.
  • You may bring a friend or relative with you to your appointment. You may also ask for a chaperone for your examination if you feel this is necessary. Please contact us to arrange this.
  • We may use a variety of treatment techniques, depending on the nature of your problem.
  • If physiotherapy is to be successful, we need your co-operation. Please follow the advice we give you and do your home exercise programme.
  • We have a gym that may be used as part of your assessment / treatment, under the supervision of a physiotherapist.
  • Goal-setting is an important part of physiotherapy; it is helpful to think about what you would like to achieve by coming to the department.

Staff

All our physiotherapy staff are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and have a special interest in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

The department is involved in physiotherapy training, and has students throughout the year from Oxford Brookes University and Coventry University.

All patients seen by students are closely supervised.
