Value Based Interviewing (VBI)

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) started to use Value Based Interviewing in 2013.

Background

Our use of Value Based Interviewing followed a successful partnership with the Health Foundation and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

The programme of work sought to ensure that our organisational values were reflected in the day-to-day care we provide, through designing and delivering value based interviewing as part of our recruitment process.

The Trust's core values were drawn up from the following themes identified by staff:

We recognise that the values and attitudes of our staff can have the greatest impact on the quality of patient care and patient experience.

VBI has been used and established in a number of organisations, including the NSPCC. It has been shown to effectively identify candidates who are a 'better fit' for the organisation, and therefore the right people to deliver the best service to patients or service users, and it has also been demonstrated that VBI helps to ensure that those recruited are more likely to be happy and engaged in their roles because of their fit with the organisation's culture.

VBI is underpinned by robust research, and it has been proven that this interviewing method facilitates the recruitment of people more aligned with organisational values and behaviours, and helps recruit high-performing and effective staff.
