NHS Staff Survey results published

07/03/2024

The results of the NHS Staff Survey 2023 were published nationally today (Thursday 7 March 2024) on the NHS Staff Survey website  - our results are available via the 'View Local Results' link.

In total, 6,576 Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) staff had their say and made their voice heard by completing the annual survey which was open from 25 September to 24 November 2023.

OUH's overall Staff Survey results are better than the national average - 77% of questions in the survey scored above the national average and 42% of these were significantly better (3% or more above the national average).

Key areas where OUH's survey scores have improved and are above the national average include:

  • 79% of staff agree that care of patients is OUH's top priority - the national average is 74.8%
  • 74.8% of staff would be happy with the standard of care provided at OUH if a friend or relative needed treatment - the national average is 63.3%
  • 63.4% of staff would recommend OUH as a place to work - the national average is 60.5%

The introduction of a Values Based Appraisal window at OUH for the last two years has had a positive effect - 93.4% of those who took part in the Staff Survey in 2023 reported that they had an appraisal in the previous 12 months, compared with 72% in 2021. The national average is 83.1%.

Areas for continued focus include improving the quality of appraisals - for example, staff feeling that their appraisal helped to set clear personal objectives for their work and made them feel valued - eradicating bullying and harassment, and prioritising the health and wellbeing of staff.

In a personal message to all OUH staff following publication of the Staff Survey results today, Terry Roberts (Chief People Officer) said:

"Many of our people taking part in the survey is important so we hear what is working well for you at OUH and what could be even better, so that together we can make OUH a great place to work where we all feel we belong - which is the vision of our OUH People Plan 2022-25.

"Trustwide actions in response to the Staff Survey results will be aligned with our OUH People Plan Year 3 priorities and with our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Objectives 2022-26."
