This article is more than one year old.

All staff working at Oxford University Hospitals are being encouraged to have their say and make their voices heard by getting involved in Speak Up Month at OUH this October.

October is designated by the National Guardian's Office as the annual Speak Up Month. This year the theme is Freedom to Speak Up for Everyone and the Freedom to Speak Up (FtSU) team at OUH is leading a range of activities to show how all our people have a part to play in growing a culture where everyone feels able to speak up safely.

Following Speak Up Month, OUH is in the running to win the Freedom to Speak Up category at the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards on 17 November – the Trust was shortlisted for the award earlier this year.

Professor Meghana Pandit, Chief Executive Officer, has recorded a personal video message to all OUH staff to launch Speak Up Month.

She said: "I am delighted to launch the fifth annual Speak Up Month here at OUH. This October the theme is Freedom to Speak Up for Everyone and we are committed to making that a reality at OUH because we know that listening to and acting on matters and concerns raised will help us deliver the best possible care for our patients and will also help us make OUH the best place to work.

"The Trust Board and I are committed to making this a reality and to sustaining an open and transparent culture at OUH where everyone has the freedom to speak up."

What is happening at OUH this October to mark Speak Up Month 2022?

Dr Jayne Chidgey-Clark (National Guardian for Speaking Up) will be visiting the John Radcliffe Hospital on Friday 14 October to give a talk which will be streamed so staff can watch it either live or via a recording afterwards.

All staff are invited to take part in the Best Dressed Noticeboard Competition by decorating their ward or department’s staff noticeboard with their Speak Up pledges about how they support the Speaking Up culture at OUH. The winning ward or department will receive an M&S food hamper.

The OUH FtSU team will be hosting Speak Up Month roadshows during week beginning Monday 17 October on our four main hospital sites and at OUH Cowley, where many staff who work behind the frontline to support our clinical teams are based. They will be joined by Trust Board members, colleagues from the Wellbeing and Culture & Leadership teams, and representatives from our BAME, LGBT+ and Women's Staff Networks.
