Temporary unit welcomes dialysis patients back to Horton General Hospital

The former F Ward at the Horton General Hospital has been transformed into a temporary Renal Dialysis Unit from Monday 15 January 2018. The temporary unit is open six days a week.

Since the beginning of January 2018, the six-bed Renal Dialysis Unit at the Horton General Hospital has been unavailable, as an increased number of acutely unwell patients, combined with a high number of patients in our hospitals who are waiting for the next stage of their care although medically fit to leave, has meant more beds have been needed for inpatients.

Dialysis patients from north Oxfordshire have had their treatment temporarily relocated to Oxford or other areas, and the Trust is enormously grateful to them for their understanding.

Our Estates team has been busy ensuring that facilities and machinery are all in place within the temporary unit, and patients have been informed that, from Monday morning, they will be able to return to the Horton for their dialysis.

Allie Thornley, Matron and Clinical Lead for Renal Medicine, said:

"We will be visiting on Sunday to move in stock and medicines in order to ensure we are ready on Monday. It will be welcome news for our patients, who will once again have the convenience of dialysis closer to home.

"I would like to thank the Estates team at the Horton for their help and am grateful for the flexibility of the dialysis nurses from both Oxford and the network units, many of whom have contributed by working additional shifts or travelling to other units - without them this could not have happened."
