Professor Jonathan Montgomery has been appointed as the new Chair of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

He will succeed the Trust's current Chairman, Dame Fiona Caldicott, who is due to complete her term of office in March 2019.

The Trust's Council of Governors, which includes elected representatives of the public and staff, made the appointment at its meeting on Monday 10 December 2018, following a recommendation by an Appointment Panel which included four elected governors.

Jonathan Montgomery is Professor of Healthcare Law at University College London (UCL) and Chair of the Health Research Authority, which protects and promotes the interests of participants, patients and the public in health research.

He served on local NHS boards in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight for more than 20 years up to March 2013 - including being the Chair of a group of primary care trusts, a strategic health authority and two provider trusts - and was a member of the panel of advisers to the Morecambe Bay Investigation, which reported in 2015.

He is also a past Chair of the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and the Human Genetics Commission.

Professor Jonathan Montgomery says: "I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as the new Chair of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust by the Council of Governors. I see the positive partnership between the Board and our governors as a real strength as we move forward.

"The NHS in Oxfordshire faces significant challenges, but there are great opportunities, and I am looking forward to working alongside patients, staff and our key partners and stakeholders in the local health and care system so that together we can shape a bright future to benefit the people we serve."

Anne Tutt, Vice-Chairman of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Appointment Panel which was convened to lead the process of appointing a new Trust Chair, says: "I would like to welcome the appointment by our Council of Governors of Professor Jonathan Montgomery as the new Chair of Oxford University Hospitals.

"I am confident that Jonathan has the leadership and skills to guide our organisation and I look forward to working with him. I am sure that our staff, governors and patients will give him a warm welcome when he takes up his post in the new year."

Martin Havelock, elected Public Governor for Vale of White Horse, was one of the governors on the Appointment Panel which recommended Professor Jonathan Montgomery's appointment as the new Trust Chair to the full Council of Governors at its meeting on Monday 10 December.

He says: "The process for appointing the new Chair demonstrates the important role which governors elected by members of the public and staff jointly play in shaping the future of our four hospitals. We look forward to working with Jonathan when he joins the Trust."
