Nicola Maisey, a Staff Nurse on Blenheim Ward at the Churchill Hospital, received a DAISY Award in recognition of the excellent compassionate care she provided to a patient following their surgery.

Dave, the patient who nominated Nikki, and his wife Gini, attended the event. The nomination read:

"I had the difficult experience of undergoing surgery for tongue cancer and spent 10 days recovering in the Head and Neck department. While this was one of the most vulnerable and challenging times of my life, I had the immense privilege of being cared for by Nikki — someone who truly exemplifies everything the DAISY Award stands for.

"Nikki is not only deeply professional and incredibly knowledgeable, but also caring, patient, funny and remarkably considerate. She made an intimidating and painful journey feel safe and manageable with her gentle approach and compassionate nature.

"One of the moments that best illustrates her kindness was when she had to remove my drains over two days — a process I had dreaded. Nikki explained each step calmly and clearly, reassuring me and taking extra care to be as gentle as possible. Her patience and empathy turned what could have been a traumatic experience into something I could face with confidence and trust.

"Nikki checked on me regularly, always quick to respond when I was in pain or needed anything. Her presence alone brought comfort, and her dedication went far beyond what is expected.

"I can't thank Nikki enough for her role in my recovery. She turned (with the rest of the team too!) a difficult hospital stays into something I could get through with dignity and even moments of laughter.

"Nikki is a true credit to the nursing profession. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Congratulations, Nikki, and thank you for all you do.
