Architecture students create designs for digital healthcare ideas lab

Oxford's digital healthcare ideas lab, The Hill, is collaborating with Architecture students from Oxford Brookes University to design a new innovation hub.

The Hill, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and supported by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, encourages and supports innovation in healthcare, particularly in digital health.

Up until now, The Hill has not had a permanent base. The new Hub will create a meeting place, information sharing point and create a physical place of identity for group's work in digital wellbeing innovation.

It aims to connect, incubate, support and host activities for members of the public, entrepreneurs and experts in medicine and health care who wish to collaborate to develop new ideas, products and services that exploit advances in digital technology.

"It is so important for us to have a central hub for creative people to come together to exchange ideas and collaborate," says Nick De Pennington, Neurosurgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and co-founder and Director of The Hill.

"This hub will become a melting pot of great ideas which lead to advances in digital healthcare."

First-year Architecture students from Brookes have been tasked with creating designs for a hub where both patients and healthcare professionals can drop-in to discuss their ideas and get advice.

An exhibition of the students' initial ideas is now on display to the public in an exhibition at the Churchill Hospital's South Street Gallery which is situated opposite the main restaurant.

Visitors are encouraged to give feedback they have on the project and the designs they like best by emailing hello@thehill.co

"This is such an exciting project which combines the innovation of The Hill with the creativity and skill of the students," says Ruth Cuenca, Architecture Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.

"There is a wide range of unique designs on show in this exhibition and we look forward to receiving the public’s reaction."

Various elements of the most popular designs will be assimilated into a brief which senior Brookes students will use to create a detailed design, one of which will be selected for construction.
