Alison Wright
Alison Wright, a midwife at the Women's Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, received a DAISY Award in recognition of her outstanding care, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding vulnerable women and children.
Her nominator said: "During a recent weekend shift on the postnatal ward, Alison was involved in supporting an extremely vulnerable woman who made a significant disclosure of long-term domestic abuse. Alison responded with the utmost sensitivity, care, and professionalism. She immediately created a safe and supportive environment for the woman, ensuring she felt heard, protected, and respected.
"Alison's approach was both calm and decisive. She provided strong leadership while simultaneously supporting a newly qualified colleague who was present. Rather than taking over, she involved the new midwife throughout the process, using this as a valuable teaching opportunity while never compromising the safety or dignity of the woman in her care.
"She went above and beyond in ensuring the safety of not just the woman and her newborn baby, but also considered the wider family, including the children at home. Alison swiftly escalated her concerns to the maternity safeguarding team, liaised with the appropriate out-of-hours services, and was clear and firm in her communication, leaving no room for uncertainty in the urgency of the situation.
"Alison returned to work the next day and continued to offer support to both the woman and her colleagues. The woman felt safe enough to disclose further information to the safeguarding team, which prompted an urgent, multi-agency safeguarding response involving the police and social services.
"That same day, a robust safety plan was put in place, and the woman and all her children were safely moved to begin a new life free from fear and harm. I have since spoken to the woman, who is safe and incredibly grateful. She expressed how Alison's kindness, empathy, and quiet strength made her feel secure enough to disclose years of abuse, something she had never done before. For the first time in many years, she feels safe and hopeful for the future.
"Alison's exceptional care exemplifies the values and heart of midwifery. Her ability to balance clinical skill, compassionate care, and team mentorship in such a complex and emotional situation is truly inspiring. I am immensely proud of her and of the whole team. Alison’s actions changed lives and quite possibly saved them. She is deeply deserving of this recognition."
Congratulations, Alison, and thank you for all you do.
