Society and College of Radiographers celebrates Radiographer from OUH

Alison Hewitt, Oxford University Hospitals Rotational Radiographer, has been interviewed for - and featured on the cover of - the latest Society and College of Radiographers' magazine, 'Synergy'.

As well as working as a Radiographer on multiple OUH sites, Alison Hewitt is a social activist, who became the first Black female member of the Society of Radiographers' UK Council.

In the 'Profile' article, headlined 'Campaigning for equality - Alison Hewitt speaks truth to power', she talks about how a chance encounter with an advert for a Radiography diploma course at Leeds General Infirmary directed her towards a specialty she had never even heard of before.

After qualifying in 1990, her career path began in earnest at Hillingdon Hospital, where experience as a health and safety representative led on to an interest in industrial relations, and thereafter to a focus on equality, for which she has campaigned since.

In 1997 she was instrumental in the formation of the Minority Ethnic Network of the Society of Radiographers (MENSoR) - which later joined with the LGBTQIA and Disability networks to become 'equalise' - supporting 'equal rights for all members regardless of race, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability and belief'.

Alison is a prolific networker on social media as well as face to face and admits that her constant quest for social justice can sometimes make her unpopular.

She says: " I'm just trying to remind people that we all bleed the same blood... It's a non-stop effort speaking truth to power, and I'm not sure it's ever going to stop."
