'I’m just glad that I can help in these trying times’


From being stuck behind a screen to spending his day outdoors greeting and helping patients, Peter Inwood's job has dramatically changed in recent months.

Normally a Data Manager for the IT team in the Renal and Transplant Department at the Churchill Hospital, the COVID-19 pandemic has put Peter's work on hold and he was redeployed to the Phlebotomy team.

His new role primarily involves working in Car Park 4 and directing patients who need a blood test or who require a COVID-19 swab test in advance of a procedure. He also helps other patients using the car park, including those using the Trust’s respiratory, sleep, sexual health, and pharmacy services.

Almost a complete change to every aspect of his job, Peter is now patient-facing, helping multiple departments – and feeling healthier for spending time outdoors.

He said: "Above all I'm grateful and glad to be redeployed so I could still help. Making patients feel welcomed where I can is particularly rewarding.

"I'm glad to be directly helping patients and assisting the Phlebotomy team and other departments where possible.

"It's been a pleasure to work with other teams as it's allowed me to meet new people, build more relationships in the hospital, and to see the hospital from a different perspective."

He added: "I'm feeling happier and healthier by helping patients and being active outside all day. I'm just glad that I can help in these trying times."

Knowing the importance of simply being a friendly and welcoming face, Peter is especially considerate of patients who are isolating and potentially have limited social interaction.

Peter has received praise from patients and staff for how helpful and kind he has been for visitors to the Churchill.

Hayley Smith, Matron of the Oncology and Haematology Directorate, said: "Peter volunteered to support the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic and he was recruited to support the patient phlebotomy and swabbing service. 

"He has been managing the flow of patients and cars through Car Park 4 at the Churchill Hospital, ensuring patients get to their appointments on time and that patients are seen in an orderly manner. 

"Nothing is too much trouble to Peter who always has a warm smile and is so helpful. Peter makes sure that patients know where to go and feel reassured. Thank you, Peter, for your smile and commitment to our patients."

Terry Roberts, Chief People Officer at the Trust, said: "I am delighted to see the great work that Peter has done in his unexpected role. He has truly embodied the Trust’s values and adapted to supporting the wider team through this challenging time, learning new skills and enjoying the change.
