Cochlear Implant referral process

Oxford Auditory Implant Programme accepts referrals from audiologists and ENT doctors.

Referrals should be made in writing to:

  • Mr Ramsden, ENT Consultant
  • Oxford Auditory Implant programme
    ENT, West Wing
    John Radcliffe Hospital
    Headley Way
    Oxford OX3 9DU

The referral criteria are as follows:

  • profound deafness of 90dBHL or more at 2 and 4kHz; this can include ski-slope losses, where the hearing in the lower frequencies is better
  • has had a trial of standard air conduction hearing aids
  • poor speech discrimination and listening.

Patients with thresholds outside these criteria will be considered, but we recommend that the referrer discuss the situation with one of the team first.

Once a person is referred to the Oxford Auditory Implant Programme, an acknowledgement letter will be sent to the referrer and copied to the patient.
