Rheumatology Advice Line

We offer a telephone advice service for patients and those involved in your care.

The advice line is not an emergency line. As it is operated by an answering machine, please do not leave any calls that require urgent action.

If you need urgent advice, or advice not related to your rheumatology condition, you should contact your GP, call 111 or attend your nearest Emergency Department.

The advice line is for access to clinical advice and support for patients who attend the Rheumatology Department at:

  • Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
  • Horton General Hospital
  • Witney Community Hospital
  • Bicester Community Hospital
  • Chipping Norton Community Hospital.

It is run by trained nurses who specialise in Rheumatology

When to call the Rheumatology Advice Line

The advice line is intended to supplement the advice of your GP, not replace it. There are answers to many of your queries on this website.

You should only call the Advice Line:

  • if you have a 'flare-up' of your arthritis that has not improved using self-help measures for at least a week (see our flare management advice leaflet or on the website)
  • if you are experiencing side-effects which you feel may be caused by the medication prescribed for your arthritis
  • if you have concerns relating to your condition or treatment which cannot wait until your next appointment
  • to report progress only if the doctor or nurse specifically asked you to do so.

If you have a homecare drug delivery query, please contact the delivery company e.g. Healthcare at Home or Lloyds Pharmacy Clinical Homecare in the first instance.

When not to call

  • To change an appointment. Please call Appointment Enquiries: 01865 737871
  • To request a new yellow shared care card. Please call 01865 737508
  • To obtain test results, unless specifically asked to do so at your last appointment.
  • To discuss anything not related to your rheumatological condition.

How it works

When you call the Advice Line you will hear a recorded message asking you to leave the following information: without all this information we will not return your call.

  • Your full name and date of birth
  • Your NHS number or MRN
  • A telephone number where you can be contacted along with a range of days and times between 8.00am and 2.00pm when you will be available.
  • The reason for your call

Include your email address if you are happy to for us to contact you by email.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse.

We aim to return calls within two working days. When we call, the number will show as withheld.

Due to the high volume of calls we receive, if we cannot reach you, we will not keep trying.
