An Oxford University Hospitals consultant has won a national award for his role in promoting research in emergency medicine.

Dr Alex Novak, who is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Ambulatory Care at the John Radcliffe and Horton General hospitals, was named Principal Investigator of the Year at the research awards run jointly by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM).

The awards recognise outstanding contributions of investigators in carrying out clinical research in the field of emergency medicine.

Dr Novak was selected from a strong field of candidates. Like all those shortlisted he was asked to present at the RCEM Research Engagement Day on 10 January 2020.

He said: "I'm thrilled and honoured to have been given this award, and very grateful to have been given the chance to talk about all the work being done by the EMROx team to develop Emergency Medicine research in Oxford, as well as by our regional partners in the Thames Valley.

"Huge thanks to both the RCEM Research Committee and the NIHR, and all the supportive people in and around the Trust - their support and guidance has been of critical importance in allowing us to push things forward in the department, and on a personal level has had a transformative effect on my career path."

Principal investigator nominees were required to demonstrate an outstanding contribution to the design, delivery, conduct and/or dissemination of research; and to building research capacity in the specialty.

Professor Stephen Smye, NIHR CRN Specialty Cluster Lead, said: "Emergency care is one of the pressure points of the health service and important research questions abound.

"The RCEM Research Engagement Day on 10 January 2020 confirmed the vigour of the multidisciplinary emergency care research community which is well-placed to address these questions and drive emergency care services of the future."

Professor Richard Body, Professor of Emergency Medicine at the RCEM, praised Dr Novak's 'incredible efforts' and said the award demonstrated 'the fantastic value' he had brought to the field of emergency care research.
