Oxford Specialist Surgery Psychology Service (SSPS)

We are a specialist Clinical Psychology service based in the Russell Cairns Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. We are part of a Trust-wide Psychological Medicine service.

Our team provides a service for patients and their families with medical conditions or injuries requiring input from specialist surgery departments.

These departments include:

and a number of other specialist surgical teams.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical Psychologists are interested in reducing the psychological impact of medical conditions or injuries on patients and their families.

We are involved in the care of patients and their families at whatever stage we are needed. We are available to discuss the emotional impact of living with physical health and appearance-related conditions, and work with patients to maximise their coping and quality of life.

Within the SSPS team, our work may include the following.

  • Early intervention and advice about managing challenging situations or preventing psychological difficulties developing.
  • Psychological therapy regarding the psychology of appearance and adjustment to medical conditions (e.g. managing uncertainty, self-esteem, coping with the responses of other people).
  • Supporting patients and their families with decision-making about surgery.
  • Preparing patients and their families for surgical procedures.
  • Working with parents and families to help them adjust to the patient's medical condition and how this influences their parenting.
  • Consultation and liaison with other medical colleagues, schools and child services.
  • Conducting cognitive and developmental assessments.

Clinical Psychologists have a doctorate in psychology and many years' experience working with children and adults. We are specialists in dealing with a wide range of emotional issues and do this through assessment, talking therapies and one-off consultations.
