Falls prevention and safer mobility
Falls in hospital happen to people of all ages; they can cause injuries and extended stays, and hinder recovery. While it may not be possible to prevent all falls, there are measures to reduce the risk.
What you can do
- Inform us about any previous falls or if you are concerned about falling in the hospital.
- Use your call bell if you need assistance moving, in particular if you need help using the toilet.
- Ensure your shoes or slippers fit well and grip effectively.
- Ensure glasses and hearing aids are used as prescribed.
- Use your usual walking aid, keep it close by.
- If you are dizzy, let a staff member know.
Your bed space
- Keep your curtains open; visibility helps us keep you safe.
- Use your bedside locker to store items safely and keep the area clear of obstacles.
- Do not lean on hospital furniture, it is on wheels and moves.
- Take your time getting up from the bed or chair - if you feel dizzy, stop and alert a member of staff.
- Drink regularly and eat well.
High risk areas
- Be careful in the bathroom and toilet - ask for help if needed and use the grab rails.
- Take part in your rehabilitation safely and follow the instructions of the therapy and ward staff.
What we will do
- Assess your mobility requirements.
- Monitor your blood pressure lying down and standing up to check for a drop and dizziness.
- Test your memory if you are over 65 years of age, or during your admission.
- Create a continence care plan to support you.
- Discuss the use of bed rails with you.
What we will provide
- Safe footwear: non-slip socks if you do not have your shoes or slippers.
- A call bell for you to request help; it should be easily reachable.
- Enhanced Care and Close Observation if additional supervision is required following assessments.
- Encouragement to move and be proactive in your rehabilitation safely, to decrease muscle loss and help balance.
