Patients have scored Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) highly for privacy, dignity and trust in their doctors in the national Adult Inpatient Survey, published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

A total of 443 patients responded, a response rate of 37.6%. All had spent at least one night in an OUH hospital in November 2025.

Patients scored the Trust highest for being given enough privacy when examined or treated (9.5 out of 10), getting enough to drink (9.4), having confidence and trust in the doctors treating them (9.1), being treated with respect and dignity (9.1), and being treated with kindness and compassion (9). The overall experience of being in hospital was rated 8.2.

OUH scored about the same as most other NHS Trusts on 48 of the 49 benchmarks questions, and somewhat better on one, which asked whether patients could get hospital food outside set mealtimes. No question was rated as worse than most other Trusts.

Leaving hospital scored lowest of the 12 sections, at 7.1. Patients reported ed that they and their families were not always involved in decisions about discharge and were not always given the information or support they needed once home.

Yvonne Christley, Chief Nursing Officer at OUH, said: "Thank you to every patient who took the time to tell us about their care, and to our teams for the compassion that patients have recognised in these results.

"The survey is equally clear about where we must improve. Patients told us that leaving hospital is not always well planned, and that they and their families are not always as involved as they should be. Going home safely, with the right support in place, is part of care and not the end of it. We will report our progress through our Trust Board."

Results are adjusted for the age, health and other characteristics of each Trust’s patients, so that Trusts can be compared fairly.
