Another successful ‘Super Surgery Day’ has taken place at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). Nine endocrine surgery procedures were carried out in a single theatre by a specialist team in under eight hours at the Churchill Hospital. These included two thyroid day‑case procedures performed for the first time in a decade.

The ‘Super Surgery Day’ initiative continues to receive positive feedback from patients, particularly for the expedited treatment and the convenience of a weekend appointment. These surgery days are held on Saturdays to make use of theatre capacity at weekends and aim to reduce waiting times across the Trust.

Designed to deliver rapid surgical treatment to a high number of patients, the day ensures timely and efficient care. This latest event was a clear success, with all procedures running smoothly.

The multidisciplinary team included surgeons, anaesthetists, anaesthetic nurses, a scrub team, and a consultant, supported by health support workers and administrative staff. All patients were reviewed via telephone appointments with the surgeon and anaesthetist in the week leading up to surgery for final checks and consent.

Shad Khan, Consultant Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Endocrine Surgery at OUH, said: "We delivered more than double the number of surgeries that would normally take place in the same timeframe. As one of the largest endocrine units nationally, it’s great that we are able to include day‑case procedures and work towards the national recommendation, whilst also taking on the most complex cases from our regional hospitals.

"The success of the day demonstrated what can be achieved through strong teamwork and our shared commitment to delivering the highest quality care for our patients.

"It is a testament to the dedication and outstanding efforts of our teams, as well as the meticulous planning that went into the layout and logistics of the day. Thank you to our hardworking administrative, the theatre and day‑surgery staff who volunteered their time to make this happen."

Lisa Glynn, Director of Clinical Services at OUH, said: "We are committed to providing high‑quality care and reducing waiting times at OUH. The success of this 'Super Surgery Day' and the roll out of thyroid day case pathway, represents an impressive and important achievement. Thank you to all colleagues involved for their ongoing efforts to improve the care we provide."

Felicity Taylor‑Drewe, Chief Operating Officer at OUH, said: "We understand that some patients are experiencing longer waits than we would hope for. Our teams are working tirelessly and innovatively to bring these waits down and ensure patients receive the care they need. Thank you to every colleague involved in the success of the day, for your continued hard work and dedication."
