Horton Endoscopy achieves JAG accreditation once more

24 September 2025

Patients receiving endoscopy treatment at the Horton General Hospital can remain confident of exceptional care following the department’s full accreditation by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) earlier this year – a prestigious national recognition of excellence in clinical quality, patient experience, and service leadership.

JAG accreditation is regarded as the gold standard for endoscopy services across the UK, assessing units against a comprehensive set of criteria that includes clinical safety, patient outcomes, training, and service management.

This milestone follows a rigorous assessment process, during which the department demonstrated excellence in areas such as patient-centred care, efficient service delivery, robust clinical governance, and commitment to continuous improvement.

The endoscopy department at the Horton General Hospital sees thousands of patients each year, and plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating a range of gastrointestinal conditions.

Soumya Varghese, Endoscopy Sister at OUH, said: "We are delighted to receive JAG accreditation, which reflects the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of our multidisciplinary team. We are committed to providing safe, effective, and compassionate care for every patient, and this recognition is a testament to that commitment."

The accreditation also acknowledges the department’s contribution to training and education, ensuring that endoscopists and the nursing team are equipped with the skills and support they need to deliver high-quality care.

Professor Andrew Brent, Chief Medical Officer at OUH, said: "Congratulations and thank you to our dedicated team of staff for once again achieving JAG accreditation, which is recognised as the gold standard for high quality endoscopy services. This is a marker of the excellent service that the team continue to provide for our patients.”
