Success for 'Super Surgery Day' trial at OUH

Twelve patients had breast cancer surgery in around nine hours at the Churchill Hospital as part of a 'Super Surgery Day' trial.

It was a feasibility trial of the 'high efficiency list', aimed at reducing waiting times for cancer patients at Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust.

The day is designed to deliver rapid surgical treatment to a high number of patients, ensuring timely and efficient care. The trial was a success, with all surgeries proceeding smoothly and each patient being discharged on the same day.

Gael MacLean, Consultant Breast Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery at OUH, said:

"This 'super surgical day trial' has demonstrated what great teamwork combined with our commitment to deliver the highest quality of care for our cancer patients can achieve. Special thanks go to our hard working theatre and day surgery staff for volunteering to work on a Saturday."

The multidisciplinary team included surgeons, anaesthetists, anaesthetic nurses, a scrub team, and one consultant supported by health support workers and admin staff.

All patients were seen in clinic by a surgeon the day before for final checks, consent, and surgical site marking.

The trial received positive feedback from patients, particularly for the expediting the treatment, and the convenience of a weekend appointment.

Giles Bond-Smith, Clinical Director of General Surgery in the Surgery, Women's and Oncology (SuWOn) Division at OUH, said:

"We are thrilled by the resounding success of the day, which has reduced the waiting times for our cancer patients. The day is also an innovative way to make best use of resources that were otherwise not used on the weekends.

"It is a testament to the dedication and incredible work of our teams, and the meticulous planning of the layout and logistics for the trial day. The team is now eager to build on this success by exploring further improvements to the ‘high efficiency list’ model, ensuring its safety, sustainability, and long-term success."

Felicity Taylor-Drewe, Chief Operating Officer at OUH, said: "We are committed to providing high-quality care and reducing waiting times here at OUH.

"The success of the 'high efficiency list' super surgery day trial is an incredible and important achievement.

"Thank you to all colleagues involved for consistently looking into ways to improve the care we provide."
