New integrated hub at the Horton

This article is more than five years old.

In early October the Trauma inpatient ward at the Horton General Hospital moved from Oak to F Ward, where it is now adjacent to the outpatient Trauma Gym.

The Trauma Service is now also using this space for rehabilitation for inpatients.

As outpatient use of this area is scheduled, there is plenty of capacity for inpatients to use the gym the rest of the time: this means that the gym is being used in a very efficient way.

For a long time the Rowan Day Centre gym has been under-used as gym space, and with our Trauma inpatients now using a different gym, this large space is no longer being used as intended. It has been decided that the space will be used to bring together a number of services into an integrated service hub for those Horton services which have until now been in temporary accommodation on the Horton General Hospital site.

These services are the Early Supported Discharge for Stroke team, the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy teams, the Home Assessment and Reablement Team (HART) and the Acute Hospital at Home service.

The Early Supported Discharge for Stroke team is an exciting new service development for the Horton, and will help us to help patients nearer to home. Bringing these services together will benefit patients through improving timely discharge from hospital to home.

Plans have been agreed for the conversion of this area, and the refurbishment will be complete by the end of 2018.

It is important to note that there will be no loss of gym space, as the former Oak Ward recently vacated by Trauma will be refurbished.

Renal Dialysis and outpatient services will be substantially expanded and delivered from this area, as will an enhanced Cardiology Service, reducing delays for specialist Cardiology treatment and the need for patients to travel to Oxford.

Alongside these services, a new Rehabilitation Gym for medical inpatients will be provided here.

Therapy staff are currently being invited to give their input into the design of this gym, to make sure it meets the requirements of their patients and the service needs.
