Stunning mural transforms patient waiting area

04/03/2024

The outpatient waiting area in the Blenheim Head and Neck Unit at the Churchill Hospital has been transformed with a stunning wall painting, which brings vibrant images from nature right into the heart of the building.

The project came about following a survey through which patients shared their experience of the Blenheim Head and Neck Unit waiting area.

Some patients may need to wait there for several hours, and feel anxious and stressed. They suggested transforming it into a positive and welcoming environment, with calming but colourful nature-based imagery.

The idea for the mural was then presented for consideration by the OUH Specialist Surgery Shared Decision-making Council, and funding was provided via artlink, Oxford Hospitals Charity's arts programme.

Programme Arts Lead Ruth Charity coordinated the project, and local Oxford artist Lisa Curtis - aka LisaMadelt - brought the idea to life in grand style and colour. She is also advising on the colour schemes for other areas across the Trust.

OUH Clinical Practice Educator and Council Facilitator Emmanuel Kesse said:

"Working with Lisa Curtis and Ruth Charity was both fun and inspiring as they brought a wealth of experience... Lisa has transformed the waiting area in the Blenheim Head and Neck Unit Outpatient Department. Thank you to Lisa, Ruth and Oxford Hospitals Charity for supporting our initiative."

Artist Lisa Curtis said:

"It's been such a pleasure to design and paint this mural. The staff and patients asked for something calming and joyful to look at, and I hope this combination of plants, flowers and dragonflies does the job. The new colours have really had such a positive impact on the space already and I hope they will do for many years to come."

OUH Specialist Surgery Matron Bernadette Mitchell said:

"I popped along to see Lisa at work creating the beautiful mural... what a transformation! We have excellent feedback from patients and staff alike."

Oxford Hospitals Charity works across the whole Trust to provide help with hospital areas.
