This article is more than one year old.

We are delighted to announce that Jo Buxton, one of our Stoma Care nurses and a member of our Colorectal Cancer Nursing Team, has been awarded the prestigious Philip Salt Award for Stoma Care Nurse of the Year 2022.

Jo qualified as a nurse in 1997 and gained experience within lower and upper GI, vascular, breast and endocrine surgery. On moving to Oxford in 2000 Jo became a senior nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital and was awarded 'GI Nurse of the Year' in 2003.

'Jo B', as she is known to the team, was nominated by her peers, who said:

"Jo has brought great humour to our department, and this has been such a tonic for the team, and all who come into contact with her, especially during the past two years. She has a passion for service development, and is always an advocate for improving things for patients and staff.

"As part of her Masters’ degree she identified methods to improve the running of our service at a district general hospital, so that staff there would not feel isolated, and patients would report high satisfaction levels.

"She has also conducted an audit of our patient Pouch service, looking at all our patients, identifying common themes around problems they were having and the changes that could be made to reduce the number of Pouchoscopy and Pouch appointments they needed.

"Alongside this, Jo has always sought to develop others in their roles, seeking out opportunities for them, which increases the morale of our whole team. She has made a terrific contribution to our service."

Tracey Becker, Lead Colorectal Specialist Nurse, said:

"We are all so proud of Jo and her achievements and she thoroughly deserves this award. The team has had a very difficult time over the past two years and Jo has worked hard to help keep up team morale, she regularly checks in with us all to see we are OK.

"As her manager, I receive lots of lovely feedback about her from our patients. Well done Jo!"
