President of Malta visits Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

02/08/2022

President of Malta, His Excellency Dr George Vella, visited the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford on Friday 29 July 2022 to see first-hand the excellent surgery and treatment Maltese citizens receive in the UK, as part of a reciprocal healthcare agreement which has been in effect for over 60 years.

President Vella and his wife, Miriam, arrived at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre where they were received by Prof. Meghana Pandit, OUH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Anny Sykes, Interim Chief Medical Officer and Prof. Andrew Price, Clinical Director, Trauma and Orthopaedics. The team proceeded to tour the building and the Botnar Research Centre.

Professor Meghana Pandit, Chief Executive Officer at OUH said: "The UK has a long-standing reciprocal agreement with Malta to provide healthcare and treatment. The Oxford Orthopaedic Training Scheme provides a platform for young Maltese surgeons to receive quality training at the NOC after completing four years of training in Malta. This partnership has proved to be a popular and valued interaction between both nations, further allowing improved skills in surgery for Malta and providing excellent trainees for Oxford."

Professor Andrew Price, Clinical Director, Trauma and Orthopaedics at OUH said: "It has been a pleasure to host the President and his wife on a short tour of our hospitals and we look forward to continuing the excellent relationship with our Maltese colleagues."
