Seven exceptional individuals and teams from Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) have been named as finalists at the Oxfordshire Health & Social Care Awards.

The inaugural awards, run by the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times, will celebrate the very best of Oxfordshire’s healthcare heroes and how they have gone above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As announced in the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times today (Thursday 29 April), the following from OUH have made the shortlist:

  • Tamara Davidson, Specialist Palliative Care Nurse – Good Nurse Award and Care Hero Award
  • Amy Bancroft, Registered Nursing Associate – Good Nurse Award and Care Hero Award
  • Courtney Hughes, Trainee Nursing Associate – Unsung Hero Award and Care Hero Award
  • Clare Trussler, Radiographer – Mental Health Award
  • May Quarmby, Consultant Clinical Psychologist – Mental Health Award
  • Jo-Anne Ellis, Specialist Paediatric Diabetes Nurse – Adolescent & Child Care Award
  • Linen Team – Health Care Team Award

Courtney Hughes, who has worked in the NHS since she was 17, said she felt "humbled" to be shortlisted. She was nominated for the work she has done through her charity to help fellow colleagues and key workers with care packages. In the community, she also helped provide elderly people with food and essentials, as well as laptops for young people, during the pandemic.

Nominated by a fellow member of OUH staff, May Quarmby set up the psychological medicine staff support for team service. She coordinated more than 200 wellbeing leads across the Trust and worked alongside colleagues in the Oxford Psychological Medicine Centre to provide support for those on the frontline with regular staff reflection groups, drop-ins, and wellbeing talks.

Also up for the Mental Health Award, Clare Trussler said she is "pleased to be able to help the staff in Radiotherapy and their patients in this difficult time" as she provided free counselling (and treats) to staff in the department.

Tamara Davidson, who cares for people at the end of their lives, described feeling "a huge sense of pride for my profession and team" after being put forward for both the Good Nurse and Care Hero awards. Jo-Anne Ellis, who works with children, dedicated her nomination for the Adolescent & Child Care Award to her "amazingly dedicated" team.

Amy Bancroft made the final list for her hard work and dedication to patient-centred care on the Acute Stroke Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Also recognised for her willingness to learn new skills, Amy said she is “very lucky” to be doing a job she loves, and is "shocked and grateful" to be nominated for two awards.

The Linen Team was nominated for their hard work behind the scenes in keeping our inpatients safe and clean, as well as co-ordinating the provision of clean scrubs during the pandemic. Michelle Redhead, Linen Services Manager, said the team is "thrilled" to make the final and to be recognised in this way.

Meanwhile, Marianne Reyes, OUH Unit Manager of Wycombe Dialysis Unit, based at High Wycombe Hospital, is in the running for the Good Nurse award at the Buckinghamshire Health & Social Care Awards.

Allie Thornley, Matron and Clinical Lead for Renal Medicine at OUH, said: "I am delighted to learn that Marianne has been nominated for this award and I wish her luck on the shortlisting. She is a competent and enthusiastic leader, committed to provide the best care for her patients, and I think it is fantastic that she has been recognised for this."
