Translational research

The sustained development and implementation of novel, clinically relevant assays is vital to enhance both the quality of patient diagnosis and management as well as sustaining the flow of specialist work referred to Oxford University Hospitals. In addition, the rapid introduction and assessment of immune-based therapies within the NHS has had an increasing impact on the responsibilities of the clinical immunology laboratory. These adaptations in therapy have refocused service development in clinical immunology towards the assessment of functional immune status.

The NHS translational Immunology research lab has developed to meet this need through the provision of accurate, quantitative measures of clinical effectiveness.

The unit is dedicated to initiating innovative and imaginative research on immunologically relevant clinical and scientific questions. The NHS Diagnostic Immunology laboratory has therefore become an integral component to the success of the Immunity theme of the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre. The future strategic direction for research and innovation within the clinical Laboratory Immunology in Oxford will continue to build on the current model of closely integrated clinical and laboratory services.

Our intrinsic commitment to robust high quality service delivery endorsed by Clinical Pathology accreditation (CPA:UKAS15189) underpins our clinical research and places us in a unique position to rapidly assess, evaluate and implement clinically relevant translational research.

The research science is led by academic/FRCPath trained immunologists uniquely suited to recognise the importance of directly relevant translational research that will help NHS patients. Our strong collaborative research links with many departments in Oxford university hospital Trust and both Oxford university and Oxford Brookes University, and also with industry allow us not only to develop but to implement specialized cellular/molecular immune assays and quickly use practiced NHS diagnostic processes to deliver them to patients.
