Adult Cardiothoracic Pre-admission and Discharge Liaison Service
Telephone helpline: 01865 220274
The Pre-admission and Discharge Liaison Nurses are based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and provide support, education and care to all patients having cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Oxford Heart Centre, and also to their relatives.
Our services include:
- organising pre-operative tests
- pre-admission clinic
- telephone helpline
- post-operative follow-up telephone calls
- support and advice to district general hospitals
- seeing inpatients on the ward prior to surgery.
The Pre-admissions Clinic provides an environment in which patients and their families can discuss their forthcoming admission and surgery and their recovery afterwards.
Each patient is seen by a specialist nurse, doctor and physiotherapist, to ensure that they are mentally and physically prepared for their surgery and that their individual needs are catered for wherever possible. They are also provided with information and a telephone helpline number so that any questions they may have can be answered.
Some of the tests carried out at the clinic include ECG, chest X-ray and blood tests. If further investigations or lifestyle changes are needed, these are organised after the Pre-admissions Clinic appointment.
