There is close collaboration with the consultant electrophysiologists, cardiac physiologists and primary care colleagues, including GPs.
Our role
We provide an outpatient service across the four pillars of advanced practice which include the following.
Clinical Practice
Nurse-led telephone or in-person outpatient clinics for new and follow-up patients with a range of arrhythmias. including:
atrial fibrillation
atrial flutter
supraventricular tachycardia
Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
symptomatic ectopy.
Provision of pre-ablation shared decision-making consultations, including:
comprehensive history taking
physical assessment
patient counselling
referral for catheter ablation procedures where clinically indicated.
Providing a technical role across all ablation procedures in the cardiac catheter labs.
Provision of post-ablation follow-up and discharge advice, including:
recovery expectations
wound care
medication management
return to normal activities
recognition of potential complications.
Education
Providing non-urgent education and advice to patients about:
diagnosis
treatment options
anticoagulation
ablation
sometimes, device therapy.
Delivering teaching and education to staff within Oxford University Hospitals, to referring centres, and nationally at specialist conferences.
Leadership
Advocating for patient safety and service quality.
Reviewing and updating clinical guidelines, developing protocols and local procedures.
Coordination of patient care, working closely with consultants and referring hospitals to provide individualised care.
Research
Participating in clinical audits and research studies relating to arrhythmia.
Conducting service evaluation as part of Quality Improvement (QI) projects.
Critically appraising evidence and incorporating guidelines into clinical practice.

You may contact us if you are a current patient who has been seen by the Arrhythmia Nurse Team in clinic within the last 12 months, or if you are post-ablation and have been advised to contact us as outlined in your discharge information.
If you have not been seen by the Arrhythmia Nurse Team within the last 12 months, you will require a re-referral from your GP or local cardiology service.
