After completing medical school cum laude and anaesthetic/intensive care residency in his native Italy, from 1992 to 1994 Dr Renna received higher specialist training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and in neuroanaesthesia and Neuro ICU at Queen's Square Hospital, London,UK.
In 1995 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Ealing Hospital, London (where he acted as Tutor of the Royal College of Anaesthetists for several years) ,followed in 2002 by a position as an Attending Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist at Washington University St Louis, Missouri, USA. During this time he was awarded the Certificate of special competence in intraoperative Transoesophageal Echocardiography by the American Board of Echocardiography.
In 2003 he returned to the UK as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London until 2015, when he moved to Oxford University Hospitals again as a Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia.
Dr Renna's research interests have been focused towards EEG monitoring of brain function during anaesthesia as well as management of anticoagulation during cardiac surgery. He has extensively published on the above topics and delivered several presentations at national and international meetings.
