Biography

George Krasopoulos is an experienced Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Oxford Heart Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, and leads the Aortic Surgery Programme at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has practised as a consultant cardiac surgeon since 2008 and joined the Oxford Heart Centre in July 2013.

He completed his specialist cardiothoracic surgical training in England, undertaking higher surgical training at several leading London hospitals. He obtained his PhD in 1999 and subsequently completed an advanced fellowship in cardiovascular and aortic surgery at Toronto General Hospital, Canada, under the mentorship of the internationally recognised cardiac surgeon Professor Tirone David.

In 2019, he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor in Cardiac Surgery. Alongside his clinical responsibilities, he maintains academic affiliations with several UK universities and is actively involved in clinical research, surgical education, the training of future cardiac surgeons and the development of advanced cardiac surgical techniques.

Mr Krasopoulos has extensive experience across the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, with particular expertise in complex aortic and reconstructive heart surgery. His specialist practice also encompasses complex coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve procedures and surgical treatments of abnormal heart rhythms and pericardial disease. A central focus of his surgical practice is the use of less invasive techniques wherever clinically appropriate. He incorporates advanced surgical approaches designed to minimise surgical trauma, reduce postoperative pain and promote a faster, more comfortable recovery, while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and surgical effectiveness.

Mr Krasopoulos places particular emphasis on individualised patient care, combining extensive surgical experience with contemporary techniques and evidence-based practice. His approach is centred on selecting the most appropriate treatment for each patient, with a commitment to clear communication, collaborative decision-making and achieving the best possible clinical outcomes.

A major area of his research focuses on complex diseases of the aorta, including aortic aneurysms and dissections. His recent work has investigated long-term outcomes following major aortic surgery, the impact of inflammation of the aorta (aortitis), and the importance of specialist follow-up. He has also contributed to national research examining inequalities in access to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care for patients with aortic disease.

His wider research interests include coronary artery bypass surgery, the performance and durability of bypass grafts, advances in heart valve treatments and the assessment of patients' quality of life following cardiac interventions. He has also contributed to collaborative research investigating cardiovascular inflammation, abnormal heart rhythms and the effectiveness of antiplatelet treatments.

George Krasopoulos has published extensively in international peer-reviewed medical journals and collaborates with multidisciplinary clinical and academic teams. His research is driven by a commitment to translating scientific evidence into safer, more effective and individualised treatments that improve patients' recovery and long-term health.
