Artwork is especially commissioned for a particular ward or department with the artist working closely with staff to create new work which meets the needs of specific patient groups.

For example, artwork for children's wards may focus on play and distraction - from decorative ceiling tiles to distract young patients undergoing an uncomfortable procedure to individual animal icons above each bed for the child to spot elsewhere in the ward.

For older patients, artwork is created to stimulate memory and conversation, positioned to encourage patients to get out of bed and walk, and helping staff to see the individual behind the illness.

Art and design for new buildings

Where possible, artists are involved at the earliest design stages on new buildings enabling artwork to be fully integrated into the new structure - from bespoke glass art to ceramic tiled panels.

We often invite artists to advise on colour schemes and furniture choices to create a coherent clinical environment - for example, using a nature-based palette to create calm and relaxing spaces.
