Professor Sir Robert Macintosh was the first Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetics, and head of the NDA, which became the first independent department of anaesthesia in Europe.
The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is housed within the John Radcliffe Hospital.
It employs 140 anaesthetic consultants with wide-ranging interests and expertise, covering 48 operating theatres across four theatre complexes, five Intensive Care Units, and delivering around 50,000 anaesthetics per year.
It is a major centre for anaesthetic training, recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, home to some 50 junior and senior trainees undertaking their training rotations, and incorporating the OxSTaR suite, a leading facility for simulation and medical education.
The anaesthetic department reflects the Trust in its diversity, with separate consultant on-call groups for paediatric, obstetric, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical and general/vascular surgery, as well as intensive cares across the site.
It plays a major role in international research, under the auspices of the Nuffield Professor of Anaesthesia.

There are seven separate on-call rotas for senior trainees and Fellows across the Trust.

Rotas are released six weeks prior to commencement, and run for three-month periods.
Requests are ideally submitted before the rota is written to ensure that all leave requirements can be met.
