About the NDA
Historically, the NDA is the first Chaired Anaesthesia Department, with eminent past Chairs and staff members such as Professor Robert Macintosh (inventor of the Macintosh laryngoscope blade), Professor Pierre Foëx (effects of myocardial ischaemia on cardiac function), Dr John Lehane (Cormack and Lehane laryngoscopy grading scale).
Research has been conducted in:
- the mechanisms of anaesthesia and pain
- functional neuroimaging
- mechanisms of anaesthesia
- advances in airway management
- ultrasound techniques in regional anaesthesia
- the use of simulation in education and team training.

GMC registration
All doctors treating patients in the UK need to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Doctors successfully appointed through the MTI will receive GMC registration sponsored by the RCoA. Once step two (outlined above) is completed, and you receive our approval letter, you will need to make your application to the GMC.
When your application is started, you will be provided with a GMC reference number. You will need to pass this number to the College, so that they can complete a CoS to support your application. The RCoA will send this CoS directly to the GMC.
Once your application is completed, the GMC will contact you to confirm this, and invite you to attend an identity check upon your arrival in the UK. Once this is completed, you will have your GMC registration approved and your name will be placed onto the GMC register and you will be able to start your clinical work.
Tier 5 visa
In order to take up your MTI post in the UK, you will need to be in possession of a valid Tier 5 visa.
As an MTI candidate, you will receive a CoS which you will need in order to apply for your Tier 5 visa from the UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI). To get this, the HR department of your UK employing Trust will need to complete an MTI application form and return this to the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC), who are the visa sponsors for the MTI scheme. Please ensure that you also complete and sign the Data Protection Consent form (last page of the application form).
The AoMRC will send you the CoS directly when this has been processed, and you can use this to apply for your visa. Please be aware that the MTI application form can only be sent to the AoMRC once the GMC has emailed you an invitation to attend an identity check, as the AoMRC requires a copy of this email to issue your CoS.
You should keep in touch with your hospital Trust and the College, so that you can confirm your start date.

Tier 2 visa
Skilled Worker visa: Overview - gov.uk
The Tier 2 visa is the main UK visa route for skilled workers coming to the UK to take up employment. In order to apply for this visa you must have a job offer and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from an employer with a Tier 2 Sponsorship licence.
Your prospective employer (OUH) must request, and, if granted, assign your CoS via their online Sponsor Management System account. They will then provide you with a certificate number which you must use when submitting your visa application.
Your Tier 2 (General) application must be made no more than three months after the CoS is issued, and you will start work no more than three months after your visa application is made.
