Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering

Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering provides scientific support, advice and services to patients, public, staff and other healthcare departments throughout the Trust and surrounding healthcare providers, on the various aspects of medical radiation, medical devices and physiological measurements.

We have over 70 healthcare scientists, working together in branches of Physics and Engineering applied to medicine across the Trust, to ensure clinical services are provided effectively, efficiently, safely and in compliance with statutory legislation and national guidance.

The department is organised into five groups:

  • Clinical Engineering and Measurement, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital
  • Imaging Physics*, based at the Churchill Hospital
  • Radioisotope Physics*, based at the Churchill Hospital
  • Business and Informatics*, based at the Churchill Hospital
  • Education and Research based at the Churchill Hospital

*Sometimes jointly referred to as 'Medical Physics' or 'Radiation Physics and Protection (RP&P)'.

We have strong links with Radiotherapy Physics, who provide scientific support and services for specialised Cancer services.

Together, we provide comprehensive technical support to the Trust, including:

  • regulatory compliance
  • scientific and technical support
  • equipment procurement
  • commissioning and maintenance
  • quality assurance
  • radiation protection services and advice.
