About us

Our friendly and experienced team of midwives and maternity support workers (MSW) can provide all aspects of maternity care.

An MLU is a unit run by experienced midwives and maternity support workers.

They are supported by colleagues from the community midwifery teams and provide care 24-hours a day, seven days a week, for women and birthing people choosing to birth their babies in an MLU setting.

We offer care to families from across the Vale of White Horse, including:

• Wantage
• Abingdon
• Faringdon
• Southmoor

and all the surrounding villages.

We also visit families at home and run regular antenatal clinics in local GP surgeries.

If you would like to give birth at Wantage Maternity Unit, please contact the midwifery team to discuss this.

The Wantage midwifery team also delivers antenatal and postnatal care.

Birth

If you have a straightforward pregnancy, with no medical or obstetric problems, and go into labour between 37 and 42 weeks, you are welcome to give birth at Wantage.

We have two delivery rooms, one of which has a large birthing pool for labour and delivery, and we encourage you to personalise them as much as you wish.

Postnatal care

Provided you have no complications, you can expect to go home several hours after the birth of your baby.

We will arrange all your ongoing postnatal care, including giving you contact numbers for more information and advice on feeding and safe sleeping.

We will offer you a home visit for your initial postnatal check, and the midwife who visits you will discuss your care and arrange all your other appointments with you.
