Our open evenings are ideal for pregnant women and their birth partners. Whether you are keen to have a community birth, or are still undecided, this is for you.

An ideal opportunity to tour the unit, meet with our midwives and ask lots of questions.

  • Monday 9 December 2019 5.00pm - 7.00pm
  • Monday 9 March 2020 5.00pm - 7.00pm

For further details please check our Facebook page or ask your midwife.

At Wantage Maternity Unit we care for women from across the Vale of White Horse, including Wantage, Abingdon, Faringdon, Southmoor and all the surrounding villages, working closely with the Abingdon midwifery team.

The Unit is the smallest of the three freestanding midwifery-led units in Oxfordshire, and offers a comforting and friendly home-from-home environment for women wanting something different from the traditional hospital setting.

Antenatal care

The friendly team of midwives and maternity support workers will provide your antenatal care within the unit and in the surrounding GP surgeries. This can include antenatal appointments, blood tests, parent education sessions and pregnancy massage.

Parentcraft classes

Our midwives and support workers offer free monthly classes to new or experienced parents, wanting to find out more about the labour and birth experience and breastfeeding. The classes cover the stages of labour, pain relief options, when to call your midwife and much more. Please ask your midwife or contact us for details.

Care in labour

We offer a safe and secure environment for women who have experienced an uncomplicated pregnancy. Our midwives provide round-the-clock one-to-one support in labour.

There are two birth rooms, one with a large pool. In labour women are encouraged to move into whatever position they feel is most comfortable - the rooms contain bean bags, birth balls and other equipment to help. We also have a large postnatal room, seating area and kitchen facilities.

Pain relief options during labour include:

  • Entonox (gas and air)
  • aromatherapy
  • massage
  • wheat bags
  • Meptid (an injection)
  • TENS machines.

Postnatal care

Once your baby has arrived the team will support you in the initial postnatal period, ensuring all your questions are answered and help given with everything from nappy changes to feeding.

Infant feeding

"Having my son here was the best decision I made! Every one of the staff here could not do enough for us the whole way through! The unit itself is very calming and welcoming and my son's birth was made easier and more relaxing by the midwives present. An amazing experience all round and I'd recommend anyone to use this fabulous unit!"

"Had my baby boy eight months ago here and it was the easiest birth out of both my two. It was just me, my partner and the midwife team there and it was the most calm atmosphere (that labour and birth can be) the midwife I had was amazing and was so calm throughout my birth made me feel so at ease. Would highly recommend this place to have babies. I will be having any future babies I have here if I can."
