From 8pm on Thursday 26 August. Read full announcement - Wantage Maternity Unit and Cotswold Birth Centre temporarily closed for births

We care for families from across the Vale of White Horse, including Wantage, Abingdon, Faringdon, Southmoor and all the surrounding villages, working closely with the Abingdon midwifery team.

If you would like to give birth at Wantage Maternity Unit, please contact the midwifery team to discuss this.

The Wantage midwifery team also delivers antenatal and postnatal care.

About us

Wantage Maternity Unit is one of four free-standing midwifery-led units in Oxfordshire and our friendly and experienced team of midwives and maternity support workers can provide all aspects of maternity care.

We offer care to families from across the Vale of White Horse, including Wantage, Abingdon, Faringdon, Southmoor and all the surrounding villages. We also visit families at home and run regular antenatal clinics in local GP surgeries.

Birth

We offer and recommend labour and delivery at the unit if you have an uncomplicated pregnancy and are likely to have an unassisted birth.

We have two delivery rooms, one of which has a large birthing pool for labour and delivery. Both delivery rooms were re-decorated in 2021, and we encourage you to personalise them as much as you wish.

Postnatal care

Provided you have no complications, you can expect to go home several hours after the birth of your baby.

We will arrange all your ongoing postnatal care, including giving you contact numbers for more information and advice on feeding and safe sleeping.

We will offer you a home visit for your initial postnatal check, and the midwife who visits you will discuss your care and arrange all your other appointments with you.

Testimonials

"Having my son here was the best decision I made! Every one of the staff here could not do enough for us the whole way through! The unit itself is very calming and welcoming and my son's birth was made easier and more relaxing by the midwives present. An amazing experience all round and I'd recommend anyone to use this fabulous unit!"

"Had my baby boy eight months ago here and it was the easiest birth out of both my two. It was just me, my partner and the midwife team there and it was the most calm atmosphere (that labour and birth can be) the midwife I had was amazing and was so calm throughout my birth made me feel so at ease. Would highly recommend this place to have babies. I will be having any future babies I have here if I can."
