The term 'rainbow pregnancy' is used by many families to describe a pregnancy following a pregnancy loss or neonatal death.

We provide care for families who have lost a baby at 20 weeks of gestation or more, or within one month of being born.

Becoming pregnant after a previous loss can bring with it a range of emotions. The Rainbow Clinic team will offer specialist support and provide continuity of care, in partnership with your community midwifery teams.

Our model of care is based on the Rainbow Clinic in Manchester. Evidence shows that care from a small team of experts reduces anxiety and unnecessary checks by healthcare professionals who may not know your story.

Depending on your medical history, you may need support from specialist services. This might include providing someone to attend scan / Fetal Medicine / Maternal Medicine appointments with you.

We can discuss these options with you, during your first telephone appointment with the Rainbow Clinic.

If you are under the care of the Fetal Medicine Unit or Preterm Birth Clinic, our Rainbow Clinic team can still support you.

The Rainbow Clinic team will work closely with you and your community midwife to provide dedicated time and support that is tailored to your needs.

Support

After your booking appointment is completed, your community midwife will offer to refer you to the Rainbow Clinic for specialist care and support at the following appointments.

This can be flexible and may differ depending on your clinical needs.
