Careers

Microbiology plays an essential role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of infections.

Microbiology encompasses:

  • Bacteriology
  • Virology
  • Molecular
  • Parasitology
  • Mycology

The above disciplines are all covered in the OUH Microbiology Department.

Staff employed within the laboratory include:

  • Level 2 Apprentice Laboratory Support Workers (Band 2)
  • Laboratory Support Workers (Band 3)
  • Associate Practitioners (Band 4)
  • Level 6 Apprentice Trainee Biomedical Scientists
  • Trainee Biomedical Scientists (Pre-HCPC registered)
  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists (Band 5-8b)

Level 2 Apprentice Laboratory Support Workers

Required

GCSC English, Maths and Science at grade 4 or above (or equivalent).

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (if English is not your first language)

BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science

Laboratory Support Workers (non-apprentice)

Required

GCSC English, Maths and Science at grade 4 or above (or equivalent)

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (if English is not your first language)

Associate Practitioners

Required

GCSC English, Maths and Science at grade 4 or above or equivalent

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (if English is not your first language)

BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science (or equivalent)

Experience in laboratory science or administration

Undertaken during employment

Level 6 Apprentice Trainee Biomedical Scientists

Required

A Levels BBC-ABB (112-128 UCAS points) including two science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths) or equivalent IB or BTEC

GCSC English, Maths and Science at grade 4 or above (or equivalent)

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (if English is not your first language)

Undertaken during employment

Healthcare Science Practitioner Applied Biomedical Science BSc (Hons)

IBMS Certificate of Competence (leading to HCPC registration)

Trainee Biomedical Scientists

Required

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science from an IBMS accredited degree course (see link for a list of accredited providers

IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component (if English is not your first language)

Undertaken during employment

IBMS Certificate of Competence (leading to HCPC registration)

HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists (Band 5-8b)

Required

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science from an IBMS accredited degree course (see link for list below)

HCPC registration

Experience relevant to the role being applied for e.g. IBMS Specialist Diploma, MSc

The department has training approval from the relevant awarding bodies to offer qualifications to all grades of staff within the above structure
