Central Nervous System (CNS) Device

Any device that is introduced into the central nervous system is a potential source of infection. These devices can be cultured for bacteria and fungi.

Sample type

  • Shunt reservoir
  • Shunt tubing
  • Epidural tips
  • Other central nervous system devices e.g. bolts and electrodes

Specimen requirements

Devices should be sent in an appropriate CE marked leak-proof container. Ideally, devices should be collected prior to the start of antimicrobial therapy.

If a shunt is completely removed, it is desirable that all three portions of the shunt are sent in separate containers and labelled clearly i.e. long end, short end and reservoir / valve.
