Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) Fluid

CAPD fluid will have a culture, gram stain and cell count.

If requested, Mycobacterial (TB) culture and microscopy for acid fast bacilli can also be performed.

Specimen requirements

Send in a sterile universal container

CAPD fluid can also be inoculated into a blood culture set and sent along with the sample in the sterile universal container

Minimum volume

1ml

(If sending blood culture bottles - 8-10ml per bottle)

Frequency of test

Daily

Turnaround time

  • Cell count - within 4 hours of receipt
  • Culture - 6 days
  • Blood culture - 5 days (negative culture)

What to request on EPR

Pus / deep wound / fluid / abscess / biopsy / scrape / aspirate / valve MCS - > specimen type CAPD fluid; blood bottle culture (non-blood fluids MCS)
