Parent accommodation

Ronald McDonald House - Oxford

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is the leading provider of family accommodation for hospitals caring for children. At the heart of our work is the desire to support families while their children are in hospital. RMHC is able to provide support to parents and ensure they have somewhere to stay that is close to their child and available without cost.

The Ronald McDonald House (RMH Oxford) is on the top floor (Level 2) of the Oxford Children's Hospital. The House has 17 en-suite bedrooms, a communal bathroom, a laundry room, two fully equipped kitchens and communal lounges. It is run by a small team of dedicated staff who keep it open seven days a week, 365 days a year.

As well as providing accommodation for our families, our role is to provide emotional support during their stay with us, offer practical advice and signposting to other organisations, or just to be a listening ear.

Due to the very limited number of bedrooms available and the high demand for rooms, we have to decide which families have a room on a daily basis. Priority is given to families with children in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU), those who live a long distance away, those staying for extended periods or those with young siblings needing to stay.

How to request a room

Below are the steps you need to take in order to request a room in the Ronald McDonald House.

  • Let your child's nurse know as soon a possible so that they can complete an accommodation request form on your behalf and send it to us. Please remember that we cannot actually guarantee a room, even after a request has been submitted.
  • If there are no rooms available at the time we will add your request to our waiting list. As soon as a room becomes available we will let the ward know and arrange a convenient time for you to be shown to your room and register with us.
  • We do have to ask for a £25 key deposit for your room - this is fully refundable on return of your key.
  • If you do not need a room because you are sleeping on the ward, but you would like to make use of the washing facilities, you can use the 'Ronald McDonald House Day Pass' which is available from your child's nurse.

How you can help

The original development of Ronald McDonald House - Oxford was fully funded by Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), however, together with the Ronald McDonald House - Oxford Board of Governors, we are responsible for raising the £260,000 annual ongoing running costs.

We organise many fundraising events throughout the year; gala dinners, quiz nights, marathons and abseils to name just a few. All the support and donations we receive make a huge difference to the hundreds of families that need our vital service each year.

Building for the future

The Trust is working with the independent charity Ronald McDonald House Charities, which already provides 17 bedrooms in the Oxford Children's Hospital for parents and families, to develop a new Ronald McDonald House within the grounds of the John Radcliffe Hospital.
