Xanthochromia (CSF)

Specimen requirements

Sample type: CSF (Universal)

Collection requirements: Tube 3 or 4 should be used for CSF spectroscopy.

Sample must be protected from light and sent to the laboratory ASAP.

Collect CSF > 12h post onset of headache.

Send accompanying blood sample for protein and bilirubin.

Avoid use of the pneumatic tube system for sample transportation.

Samples for CSF spectroscopy will usually be processed the same day if received before 8.00pm but will be analysed the next morning if received after this time.
