About us

Clinical Biochemistry is based on Level 4 of the John Radcliffe Hospital main building, and has smaller laboratories at the Churchill and Horton General hospitals.

The laboratories at the John Radcliffe and Horton offer a 24/7 service, with a shift system operating outside normal working hours of 8.30am - 5.00pm.

The Churchill laboratory is staffed Monday to Friday 8.00am - 7.00pm (closed Bank Holidays).

All laboratories are equipped with Abbott Architect chemistry and immunoassay analysers. In addition to routine chemistry analyses, the John Radcliffe laboratory provides a range of esoteric assays, antenatal and neonatal screening services, immunosuppressant drug monitoring and point-of-care testing services.

The laboratory as a whole is managed by the laboratory manager and senior scientific staff and is divided into sections each managed by a Section Manager Biomedical Scientist.

We have approximately 55 scientific staff, 30 support staff and seven medical staff working in the department across the three laboratories.

The majority of scientific staff members are Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientists; they are supported by Associate Practioners and Laboratory Support Workers.

For laboratory staff we are approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) as a training laboratory for pre- and post- registration Biomedical Scientists, along with many other post HCPC registration awards available through the IBMS.

Associate Practioners are encouraged to achieve the IBMS Certificate of Achievement and Support Workers are able to apply to do vocational qualifications such as QCF and apprenticeships.
