Photography Class 2025

Part Two

6 September to 18 October 2025

A group exhibition which comprises six separate bodies of work by six individual photographers.

There is no link between the subjects, as the photographers were given completely free choice and each chose a topic of personal interest.

The six have built up their projects over a period of months, during which they consulted with photography teacher and mentor, Rebecca Phillipson, to shape and prune their ideas into the accomplished work that appears on the walls.

The photographers are:

  • Lajla Johanssen
  • Anna Ottaway
  • Nick Rose
  • Elizabeth Shand
  • Nick Welch
  • Carolyn Wheeler

We hope there is something for everyone here, from nature in the form of butterflies, birds and flowers, to documentary projects about issues of wide interest, such as water, children and technology.

Centre for Personalised Medicine Art Competition

Winners and Finalists 2022-2025

28 April to 7 June 2025

What can we measure about our health? What sorts of conditions should newborn babies be checked for?

In what ways does personalised medicine affect our planet? These are some of the questions that the Centre for Personalised Medicine, a partnership between the University of Oxford's Centre for Human Genetics and St Anne's College, Oxford, asked young people aged 11-14 to think about in the art competitions they've held over the last three years.

This exhibition showcases some of the best entries, featuring art relating to measurements in health and disease; screening newborn babies for disease; and the environmental impact of personalised medicine.

The DNA of My Favourite Street

Photographs of Magdalen Road by Bernard Clarke

21 December 2024 to 15 March 2025

In his book Real Oxford, Patrick McGuinness writes, "If I could take the DNA of my favourite street and clone it for the benefit of humanity, I'd choose Magdalen Road".

Living for 35 years just round the corner to Magdalen Road, Bernard Clarke has used his photography to portray the DNA of the street.

He says, "It has been a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to observe the way Magdalen Road has evolved. A treasure of East Oxford, but much less familiar to those who live beyond the Plain, Magdalen Road has rarely stood still.

"Since the early 2000s, places to eat, drink and shop have sprung up adding to its already well-established richness and diversity; the number of religious and cultural groups is remarkable; the disadvantaged and those in need are welcomed and cared for; businesses prosper; the arts thrive; and the place is literally alive with young families!

"Far from becoming 'gentrified', though, Magdalen Road remains true to itself."

A Sense of Place

Mixed media paintings by Steve Empson

28 September to 9 November 2024

This exhibition by Oxford artist Steve Empson explores the influence an environment can have on our sense of belonging and our wellbeing.

'A Sense of Place' describes his own relationship with place, and his deeper knowledge and understanding that comes through painting it.

It can be emotionally intense yet invoke the deepest calm. Its culture and history are felt through observation of a place's ecology, its texture and patina, and through its air and its light.

Most of the paintings in this exhibition are predominantly soft pastel over watercolour. The subjects are from the most influential places in his life; his home environment of NE England, his adopted home of Oxford, and from over 30 visits absorbing the visual excitement of India.

When you grow up in a place, you will know it like you know no other; but there are far away places that can strangely evoke a similarly strong sense of belonging.
